August 16, 1927 — August 18, 2010

Combes, TX:
Jerry Lawton Young died August 18, 2010, at his home in Combes, Texas. He was 83 years old.
Born to parents Jennings and Iva May Young in Primera, Texas, Mr. Young grew up in Primera, where he graduated from the Wilson Tract School District.  Upon graduation, he entered Texas A & M University with the Class of 1948.  He served his country for two years in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, returning to graduate from Texas A & M in 1950 with A Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Administration.  Mr Young enjoyed a lifelong career in agriculture.
In 1951, Jerry married his college sweetheart, Primera resident Verna King Young, whom he discovered at Baylor University in 1949.  Their marriage of almost 59 years was blessed by the birth of three children, Denise Young Almon, married to Robert Almon of Harlingen; Randall Wayne Young, married to Rae Dawn Nicholas, of Harlingen; and Shelley Lyn Giglio, married to Dr. J. Kevin Giglio, of Houston.
Jerry Young was Mayor of Combes, Texas in the mid 1980's.  He was active with his young family in the First Methodist Church of Harlingen.
Jerry was an avid reader, hunter, and fisherman, and an excellent cook.  He developed a keen interest in woodworking and photography, which he shared with his family and friends.  Since retiring from active farming, Mr. Young enjoyed daily coffee and conversation with good friends, and spending time "running" with his special pets, Honey and Freckles, the family's German short-haired pointers.
Surviving in addition to his beloved wife and children are treasured grandchildren Ashley Almon, Amanda Young Short and husband James, Chase Young; Michael Giglio, and Kayla Giglio, and siblings Effie May Young and Dennis Young and wife, Lynelle.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his grandson, John Gregory Giglio.
