Jarl D Bergland

September 26, 1931 — October 30, 2016

Jarl D. Bergland was 85 and living in Harlingen, TX when he went to be with the Lord on October 30, 2016.  He had a long battle with Parkinson’s, dementia, and macular degeneration.  He was born September 26, 1931 to parents Jacob and Josephine Bergland in Grand Forks, N. Dakota.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, 3 children, Deborah (Jim) Rekas, Herndon, VA, Jill French, Minneapolis MN, Janet Bergland, San Diego, CA, 4 step children, Cris (Maria Genne) Anderson, Minneapolis MN, Sidney Anderson (Jim Merfeld), Bellingham, WA, Sara (Joel) Kretz Wauconda, WA, Eric Anderson, Minneapolis, MN, 5 grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren, 1 great grandson, and a sister Judy Salo.
Jarl was preceded in death by his parents, brother Roger, and grandson Sawyer.
Jarl attended school in Grand Forks, ND. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served his country during the Korean War.  He then attended U. of N. Dakota and graduated with a degree in Medical Technology.  His graduate work in hospital and healthcare administration was from U. of Minn. Minneapolis.  He served throughout the Midwest and Texas in hospital administration.
After his tour in the Navy he remained in the active ready reserve and was commissioned 1st Lt. in the USAF.  He retired in 1989 as a Major after serving 38 years.  His last duty station was SAC Headquarters Hospital at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, NE.  He was a Health Services Officer and was awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding noncombat service.
He served in many fraternal and professional organizations during his life time, including Boy Scouts, Municipal Judge, American Legion, Kiwanis, Lions, Jaycees, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Gideons International, and was a friend of Bill W.
Jarl was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed not only by his family and friends but by all who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of his life will be held at Central Christian Church, 1100 E. Alton Gloor Blvd., Brownsville, TX 78526 on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 11:00 am.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Central Christian Church Family Life Center.
The family also extends their gratitude to the staff of Golden Palms Retirement Center, Harlingen, and to Treasure Hills Residency and Cima Hospice for loving care.
