Janet Baker Payne went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, the 11th of April.
Janet Elizabeth Berglund was born September 24th, 1936 to Barney and Inez Berglund of Rio Hondo. Janet loved her Rio Hondo home. She was the drum major in the Rio Hondo Bobcat Band and a passionate Bobette basketball player. After graduating from high school, Janet attended Texas A&I University in Kingsville where she pursued a degree in education. Returning to Rio Hondo as an English teacher, Janet loved her colleagues and teaching her students. She was extremely active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Community Church of Rio Hondo. She was part of her bunco group for over 45 years. Janet loved to travel, go country-western dancing and take “Dr. Pepper Breaks” with her grandkids.
Janet was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Berglund; husband, Billy Bob Baker; and husband, Preston Payne. She is survived by daughter Tammy (Ben) Cowan of Rio Hondo, and grandchildren Elizabeth (Cody) Phillips and Logan (Kelsey) Cowan. She leaves behind two beautiful great grandsons, Hayden and Vernon Phillips.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Angel Care Haven for their compassionate and kind care of Janet in her final years.
A graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17th at Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum in San Benito followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Church of Rio Hondo.
