James Roy Oakes peacefully passed February 12, 2023. He was born to the late Carl Oakes and Gladys Long Oakes on September 30, 1948 in Mercedes, Texas.
He proudly served in the U. S. Navy and retired in 1988. When asked how long he had served, James’ usual reply was, “Twenty years, one month, twenty-nine days, but who’s counting.” He truly loved his naval career.
James was a kind man and would try to help a friend in need whenever he could.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Gladys L. Oakes; mother-in-law, Nellie Anderson; and sister-in-law, Jennie Oakes.
Left to treasure James’ memory is his loving wife of thirty-six years, Virginia Oakes; daughter, Melissa Oakes; grandchildren, Greg, Nick, Bryan, Walker, and Katlyn; stepson, John English (Birdie); grandsons, Greg, Nick, and Bryan; step-grandchildren, Jenna, Carter, and Addison; great granddaughter, Ryliegh; brother, C.W. Oakes; and nephew, Edward Oakes (Sherry).

James will be laid to rest Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas.
He will be truly missed by all.
