Major James Arnold McMillian, USAF, retired, beloved son, husband, father, and friend passed away Friday, October 10, 2008 in Harlingen at the age of 64.
James was born July 3, 1944 in San Antonio, TX to Joseph P. McMillian and Genie McMillian Prescott. He attended St Mary’s University in San Antonio, Park College in Kansas and Chaminade Prep School in St. Louis, MO and received a Masters degree in Environmental Science, Physics, and Electrical Engineering. He was Retired Military, a Full Time Foster Parent, a Philanthropist and a Community Volunteer.
James proudly served his country with the United States Air Force and retired after 29 years of service. He received the Air Force Commendation medal with 1 oak leaf cluster, the Air Force outstanding unit award with valor and 3 oak leaf clusters, the AF organizational excellence award with oak leaf cluster, the Air Force good conduct medal with 4 oak leaf clusters, the National defense service medal, the Vietnam service medal with one service star, the Air Force overseas short tour ribbon with oak leaf cluster, the Air Force overseas long tour ribbon, the Air Force longevity service award ribbon with 4 oak leaf clusters, the small arms expert marksmanship ribbon, the Air Force Training Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam gallantry cross with palm, and the Republic of Vietnam campaign medal.
James was a Proverbial Rocket Scientist, a Worldwide telecommunications expert, a Leader of St. Francis Xavier (and several other) Pro Life organizations, American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor, American Red Cross Disaster Volunteer, Boy Scout Merit Badge Counselor, Foster Parent with Lutheran Social Services of the South. He was a member of Vitae Society and Phi Beta Sigma. His hobbies were “The Good Shepard” of Barbados Sheep and Electronics Genius.
James is survived by his loving wife, Teresa Muehlberger McMillian; sons, Jerry, James Daniel, Robert, and Matthew; his mother, Genie McMillian Prescott; siblings Charlene and William; parents-in-law, Thomas J. and Donna Muehlberger; and grandchildren, Amareese, Jerryd, Alyson, Vita, and Bryn.
Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, TX on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 and Thursday, October 16, 2008 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. both nights.
Funeral services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, Canal Street, La Feria, TX on Friday, October 17, 2008 at 10 a.m. with full military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 205. Funeral services will conclude at the church.
