Rio Hondo:
James Richard McEowen, known as J.R. and Dickie to friends and family, died Thursday, May 31, 2007.
He was born May 3, 1940 at the old Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen to James Herschel and Evelyn McEowen. After attending Rio Hondo High School, he was proud to serve in the U.S. Navy during the early 1960’s. He was mostly stationed on the USS Sandoval, where he held the position of Master of Arms. He also filled many other jobs to his talents and ability to speak Spanish. When he had fulfilled his military obligation, JR returned to the Valley to spend his adult life.
His career experiences included teaching plumbing at TSTC and an extensive plumbing business. He eventually built the River Ranch Resort o the Arroyo Colorado River in Rio Hondo. This business venture grew into over 150 occupants in a very few years. He had a great love of adventure, but his greatest joy came from spending time with family and his many friends who made their way through the resort.
JR was preceded in death by his father and mother and his first wife, Nancie Maskornick.
JR is survived by his present loving wife and best friend, Dorothy Affolter; children, Mark McEowen and Shannon McEowen both of whom he loves dearly. He was also blessed by Dorothy’s family; Terrell Miller (Martha), James Miller (Becky), and Rhonda McKinney (Kris); and his extended family of their 7 grandchildren, Freda, Travis, Justin, Bailey, Caroline, William and Madison, the joy of his life. Also cherishing his memory are his 3 sisters, Barbara Aldridge, Annette Knight (Phillip) and Mickie Crabtree (Pat) plus a large loving assortment of nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Jr. was a proud third generation native of the Rio Grande Valley and truly a character. He was loved and respected by all who were blessed to know him. He will be missed so deeply until we see him again with our Lord.
