James McBride

February 27, 1929 — April 16, 2008

HARLINGEN:
James McBride, 79, passed away on April 16, 2008 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.  He was born on February 27, 1929 in Centralia, MO to Louis and Mayme McBride.
James McBride’s life was distinguished by a great diversity of careers.
He was a husband, a father, a military man, a preacher, an elder serving the Church of Christ, a business owner, and a business manager, and the beloved trustee of his grandchildren’s trust.
James served his country for 22 years in the Air Force retiring in 1969, with the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.
During his years in the military he often preached for the various Churches of Christ he worshiped with on the air bases where he was stationed across the United States as well as overseas.  In addition to this he was the preacher for the Church of Christ in Burns, TN for several years while he was attending David Lipscomb University.  He graduated from Lipscomb in 1972 with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education.  In 1974 he earned a Masters degree from the Middle Tennessee University in Education Administration.  He then began a third career as a sixth grade teacher which spanned 8 years.
In 1982 James’ son-in-law Paul Reynolds talked him into purchasing and running the Vacuum Shoppe in Harlingen, TX.  He owned and operated this business from 1982-1994.
In 1995 when his beloved son-in-law Paul passed away he assumed management of the Laredo Division of Pals Water Mill and various other business interests owned by Paul on behalf of his daughter Mary.
He managed those family business interests until 2004 when he retired and turned the business management responsibilities over to his son-in-law James Nabours.
James then continued to faithfully serve the Lord as an elder for the 8th and Harrison Church of Christ.  He also was a long-time member of the Harlingen Rotary Club.  He enjoyed pursuing his hobbies as an amateur astronomer and an antique car collector and was a member of the National Antique Car Club of America.
Many friends have spent evenings on his back lawn viewing the night sky and the children and the staff of Sunny Glen Children’s Home have delighted in rides in his antique cars.
James was preceded in death by his parents; son, Arthur McBride; brother, Wayne McBride and son-in-law Paul Reynolds.
He is survived by wife, Chris McBride; his children, Fred McBride, Mary (James) Nabours, LouAnne Johnson, Adrian (Darhonda) Day, Christine (Dan) Bacci; grandchildren, Barbara (Dennis) Weaver, James W.
