James Lee Cantrell

James Lee Cantrell, 92, residing in San Benito, Texas passed away of natural causes April 4, 2025. He was born in Sunset, TX on June 27, 1932, to parents Charles and Viola Cantrell.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Ione “Onie” Jenkins Cantrell of San Benito and her three children Kevin Smith (Ellen), Shelley Smith White (Ron) and Shawn Marie Smith; grandchildren, Zachery, Jamison and Grayson Smith, and Shay Stevens as well as seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Bobby Cantrell, his sister, Jenney Norris, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and in-laws.

James is preceded in death by his parents; brothers DeWitt and Jewel Cantrell; his sisters, JoEtte Krafka and Margaret Ormiston.

James graduated from Harlingen High School followed by 2 years in the Army during the Korean War. He was employed with Harlingen Implement for 40 plus years before retiring. James was a member of the Nazarene Church in San Benito being a member since 1973. He served in many areas in the church.
