James Joseph Burger

James Joseph Burger, age 88, of Harlingen, Texas, passed away June 7, 2009 at his daughter's home in Haskell, Oklahoma after a brief illness.      He was born in San Benito December 4, 1920, the youngest of 7 children, to William Andrew and Elizabeth Hoelscher Burger. When he was a child the family moved to Harlingen where his father opened the Harlingen Barber Shop.      As a teenager he worked at Day's Drug Store as a "soda jerk" before 1942 when he enlisted in the Army-Air Force during WWII. He proudly served his country as Staff Sergeant in the 326th Ferrying Squadron, 1st Transport Group of the 9th Air Force Service Command. He was at Day 2 of the invasion at Normandy Beach and after the liberation of Paris he was transferred to Ansback, Germany.
When he returned to Harlingen he worked at Delta Office Supply, later became the manager of Clarke & Courts, Inc. where he worked for 31 years; after his retirement" he started his own business, Harlingen Business Forms, which he closed in 2007.      Jimmy is survived by his only child, Elizabeth Rabedeaux; his two grandchildren and their spouses: Scott and Erica Rabedeaux, Nathan and Candy Akehurst; and a newborn great-grandson, Gavin Akehurst. He is also survived by his favorite sister, Alice Montgomery (91) of San Juan, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.      A special mention of gratitude to his neighbors, Armando and Irma Flores.      He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Coleman Burger in 2001; his siblings: Myrtle Burger (infant), Florence Edward " F.E." Burger, Elene Smith, Mildred Pulliam, and Roy Burger.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Mont Meta Memorial Park with the Rev. David Mann officiating. Local arrangements by Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
