Howard M. Pitts, 85 entered peacefully into eternal rest on August 16, 2016 at his home in Harlingen, Texas. He was born in Greenville, Texas February 5, 1931 to Lucy and Victor Pitts and attended grade school in Wills Point, Texas until the age of 9. The family moved to San Benito, Texas where he finished his schooling.
He served proudly and honorably in the United States Air Force before returning to South Texas where he began his 60 year career in farming in the Mid-Valley. While serving his country, he lovingly made life-long friendships that he never forgot. His love of farming and the outdoors was evident at home maintaining a beautiful yard. With hoe in hand and cigar in mouth, he deceived friends and neighbors into thinking that he diligently labored when in fact he was merely watering.
His passions were sports and hunting which he encouraged and shared with his family. He proudly played football and ran track for the San Benito Greyhounds. His passion for hunting led him on many memorable adventures that he could vividly recall and was more than willing to share hours on end, at times with embellishments. These same passions allowed him to develop life-long friendships that he truly cherished and never forgot. He was known as a kind, gentle man to all.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jeanette, as well as his five children and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Jo.
There no words to express the love and gratitude Howard felt for his longtime friend, Angel Gonzalez, for his devotion and hard work throughout their 60 years of farming together.
Private services, at his request, were held Friday, August 19th at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery with full military honors. Those wishing to honor his memory may donate to a charity or church of choice.
A very special thank you to his sons, Jim and Joe, for the respect, love and comfort they provided their father. The family would also like to extend a very special thank you to his caregivers, Crissy, Maria, and the two Priscillas.
A GENTLE MAN AND A GENTLEMAN
