Henrietta Mantony

August 7, 1926 — February 26, 2023

Henrietta Mantony, 96, passed away February 26, 2023, in Harlingen, Texas, where she had resided full-time since November 2021.  Henrietta, the middle daughter of Henry and Minnie Seubert of Alta Vista, Kansas, was born August 7, 1926, and graduated valedictorian of her Alta Vista High School class.  At 18 while working at the USAF base near Herrington, Kansas, she met Jess Mantony.  When they married on June 23, 1945, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri.  They were married 65 plus years when Jess died in January 2011.

The Mantonys settled in Grandview, Missouri, in 1965 and owned and operated AAA Asphalt company.  Henrietta handled the financial aspects of the business while Jess managed the operations side.  She also learned to decorate cakes, initially as a hobby, when her son Roger was an infant and then unexpectedly established a robust word-of-mouth cake decorating business, specializing in wedding cakes.

Henrietta volunteered in her church, as a Cub Scout den mother, and in Grandview community and civic organizations for decades.  She continued her volunteer work well into her 90s.  For many years she was a sought-after bridge player and was ultimately deemed a “card shark” by her fellow residents in her retirement community.  She was a fishing aficionado and spent every fall back in her beloved Kansas surroundings during pheasant and quail hunting season.  Winters were spent in Acapulco in the 60s and as a Winter Texan in the Rio Grande Valley since the early 1970s.

Henrietta is survived by her son Roger Lynn Mantony (Teri) and many nieces and nephews.  She is predeceased by her parents, sisters June Rishel and Sue Peters, and niece Sharon Slusser.

A Celebration of Life will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2023 at Golden Palms Retirement Community in Harlingen.  Following a graveside service, Henrietta was laid to rest in Alta Vista Cemetery alongside her parents and husband last week.
