Helen McQuade Wood, 92, passed away Monday, March 26, 2012, at Angelcare Haven in Harlingen. She was born July 14, 1919 in Long Island City, NY to Joseph and Mary McQuade.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Thomas Brick, who died active duty World War II, her second husband Roger Wood, sisters Ethel Lamon and Pauline Hendrickson, her niece Marianne Leggett and nephew Richard Mays. Helen is survived by her sister Dorothy Mays of Brazoria, TX and numerous nieces and nephews who knew her affectionately as Aunt Helen.
She was a veteran of World War II where she honorably served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps where she received the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. She graduated from The University of the State of New York as a registered professional nurse and obtained her private pilot license in 1947. After retirement from the Brownsville I.S.D., she enjoyed traveling with her husband Roger and the many dear friends she had made along the way.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Angelcare Haven in Harlingen for their outstanding care and support and to CIMA Hospice for the care provided to Helen in her last few weeks.
Visitation hours will be held Friday, March 30, 2012 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 10 a.m., at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito with her nephew Royal Jacobs officiating.
