Helen Nora Karcher nee Bage went to be with Our Lord October 2, 2010. Child of God, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother-Helen was born September 5, 1918 in Dime Box, was baptized September 9, 1918, graduated from Giddings High School and earned a teaching certificate from Texas State Teachers’ College.
Helen married Albert H. “Dutch” Karcher July 4th 1939. Dutch, A Giddigs baseball player, skipped the double header to wed the love of his life. Helen’s first job was to teach in a one-room schoolhouse in Fedor, Texas. She volunteered many hours in the churches where she and Albert were members. Helen also volunteered many hours as an Hidalgo County 4-H leader in the Edinburg Hospital Auxiliary, and as a Friend of Edinburg Library. Helen was an accomplished artist using oils as her favored medium. Rustic buildings with fields of bluebonnets were her signature paintings. After Dutch died in 1998, Helen moved to New Braunfels where she was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Albert H. “Dutch” Karcher; her sister, Esther Ella Timmerman; brothers, Carl Bage and Curtis Bage.
She is survived by daughters, Alba Jo Guffey (Jim) of Harlingen and Barbara Kay Magness (John) of New Braunfels; son, Albert H. “Corky” Karcher (Hazel) of Corpus Christi, Texas. Helen was blessed with seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Helen will be interred in San Benito, Texas. A memorial service is pending.
The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 181 S. Santa Clara in New Braunfels, Texas 78130.
