Harvey F. Mosmeyer

It is with a glad heart that Harvey Mosmeyer, age 89 years, has passed from the prison that was his body, and his passing is a blessing for those who believe in a better life after death. The sadness of parting came several years ago when it was finally realized that our dad and grandfather would never recover to a state of cognition, and the sadness of clinging to life was felt in every visit to his bedside.
As our father would say, he “gave it Hell”. He would also have said “If it’s worth doing, do it right”. And he did. Harvey Mosmeyer was a man of determination, pride, and love, and he was a spirited idealist. He adored his parents and brother who have gone before him. He was always a loving and kind husband to Margaret Nell Roe Mosmeyer, who passed seven years ago. He was the best of fathers to his two children, Dane Harvey Mosmeyer and his wife Courtney, and his daughter Tara Janell Mosmeyer Pratt. “Bapaw” idolized his two beautiful granddaughters, Shelby Marie Pratt and Brittany Hayden Pratt. Brittany’s daughter, Allison, is his only great grandchild.
Harvey’s love of humanity caused him to choose a career that enabled him to help others. He retired from 37 years of service in the Texas Rehabilitation Commission, where he was able to change lives daily. He was a teacher, a principal, and a counselor before he began work with TRC. Many a time he would tell stories of how education profited him, and he encouraged everyone to seek the most education possible. It was his greatest desire to see his granddaughters educated, as accordingly they have been.
When he wasn’t working, “Mose” was fishing in the bay, playing pool, gardening, or working on the farm. Born and raised a “hard headed Dutchman” in McCoy, Texas he was a rough and tumble athlete, who more than anything enjoyed baseball, and was to pursue a professional career until an unfortunate accident occurred in which he lost a hand. But, as his good friend, Bob Palmer has often remarked, “He could work harder with one hand than most men with two.” He taught us compassion, individuality, and love of nature. He taught us perseverance. He taught us to “work like horses and drink like men”. Naturally curious, Dad loved tinkering and projects. Sometimes he took inspiration from his dear old friend, Jose Cuervo. Many a night he, Jose, and Robert Wright would fish until morning—and the stories were always good, though not always believable!
We will not miss your body, Dad, but we will miss your spirit and hope that some of that fierce compassion lives on in us. We will never forget the good times, and never regret the hard ones. We take pleasure in knowing that you and Mom can now “live happily ever after”.
Graveside services will be conducted on Friday, August 22, 2014 in Kingsville, Texas with family and close friends attending.
