Harriel Henderson

June 13, 1934 — July 18, 2016

Harriel Henderson, affectionately known as Red, was born on June 13, 1934 in Waelder, Texas.  He was the youngest of three children born to Vodie Henderson and Georgia McKinnon Brown.  Harriel was raised in Harlingen, Texas by his mother and stepfather, Taft Brown. Harriel passed away on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Sunshine Haven Hospice in Olmito, Texas with his loving daughter by his side.
Harriel married Maria Loyola in 1976. To this union one child was born, Cristina Henderson.  Harriel retired as a Longshoreman from the Port of Brownsville, Texas after 37 years of service.  He spent his remaining years doing what he loved best; fishing and cooking.  His specialty was marking barbecue which he called his relaxation time.  Harriel was also known to be the “neighborhood watch guy”. He took pride in keeping up the neighborhood.  Harriel was also known as the “neighborhood landscaper”. Harriel would mow lawns in the neighborhood out of the goodness of his heart.  Harriel enjoyed working and donating his time with the African American Community Center.  He also enjoyed giving to others and donating to several non-profit organizations.  He was always a man who knew what he wanted and never gave up.
Harriel was preceded in death by his sisters, Marcella Hines and Iris Holland; and his eldest niece, Regina Isaac.
Left to cherish precious memories, his only daughter, Cristina Henderson of Harlingen, Texas; brother-in-law, Johnny Hines of Greenville, SC; nephews Howard Hines of Brisbane, CA and Chuck Holland of Elk Grove, CA; nieces Deborah Hines of Greenville, SC and Jackie Gillespie of Roseville, CA; cousins Joe, Roshawn, Tamara, Ebony and Sharron Mayberry, Maybell Jones, Sherrly Emerson, and Lonnie Davis; 6 great nieces and nephews, 7 great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Harriel was an amazing and unique man.  He was smart, caring and sincerely loved and appreciated.  Harriel will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 22, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11:00 am at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Rev. Ray Ellington officiating.  Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX. A reception with a meal will be held Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at the African American Community Development Association, 925 W. Pierce, Harlingen, TX.
