Guadalupe S. Vallejo Jr.

June 21, 1928 — March 26, 2013

Harlingen, TX: Guadalupe S. Vallejo, Jr. was called home by the Lord on March 26, 2013 at home in Harlingen, surrounded by his loving and caring family.

He was born in Harlingen on June 22, 1928 and lived here most of his life. A few years ago he and his wife moved to Houston to live with their daughter, Carolyn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe S. Vallejo, Sr and Viviana S. Vallejo; his son, Jose Angel Vallejo; and a brother, Isauro Vallejo.

“Lupe” or “Pete” as many interchangeably called him is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Amelia Saenz; his children, Guadalupe S. (Frances) Vallejo III of Jacksonville, FL; Beatriz (Armando) Lopez of Harlingen, TX; Carolyn Vallejo of Houston, TX; Dorothy Cecilia Crites of San Antonio, TX; Edilma Vallejo of Harlingen, TX; and Alberto Vallejo of Pharr, TX; and 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Lupe is also survived by one brother, two sisters and one half-sister: Raul (Ludivina) Vallejo of Rancho Cordova, CA; Diamantina (Raul) Rodriguez of Primera, TX; Clementina (Jesus, Jr.) DeLeon of Harlingen, TX; Rebecca (Ruben+) Saldana of Apache Junction, AZ; and sister in law, Edilma Vallejo of San Antonio, TX.

He graduated from Harlingen High School in 1946 and later enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was recognized for his contributions and talent as a Cryptographic Technician 805; he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal; he was qualified and certified with the 45 Caliber Pistol, Carbine SS, and the Rifle Ss. He served in Illinois and later in Alaska and was honorably discharged on April 12, 1949.

When he returned home, he worked as a television repairman and a Tri-Pak Company as well as a salesman with Montgomery Wards. Later he became a mail carrier for over twenty years with the US Postal Service and retired from that service in 1983. After that long career he returned to work as a car salesperson with A.J.’s Auto Sales in San Benito for about five years.

He was an avid fisherman since childhood and fished with his brothers in the local Arroyo Colorado. He later owned a small boat and enjoyed fishing with his friends, Omar Cortez, Israel Garza, and his compared, Eddie Weaver almost every week in the Arroyo City fishing spots. Seldom did they come home without fish for their families and friends.

Lupe was a member and president of the Local Post Office Carriers Union; President and Secretary of the Woodmen of the World Fraternal Organization; member of the American Legion Harlingen Post 205, and member of the National Rifle Association.

Visitation is scheduled on Monday, April 1, 2013 at San Benito Funeral Home from 10:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. a rosary and ceremony celebrating his life will take place at 7:00 P.M.

Funeral Mass is scheduled on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Harlingen with Fr. Joaquin Zermeno officiating. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas with full military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post 205 of Harlingen.

Pallbearers will be Guadalupe S. Vallejo III, Adolfo Vallejo, Ruben Delgado, Oscar Rene Salinas, Chris Lamas, and Roberto Zamora, Jr.; honorary pallbearer will be Armando Lopez.
