Gordon E. Gathright

August 14, 1920 — December 1, 2010

Harlingen:
Gordon Eugene Gathright is at peace with his Lord.  He died on December 1, 2010 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Gordon was born August 14, 1920 in Nashville, Arkansas to Gordon S. and Florence E. Williams.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, mentor and friend.
Gordon was a retired teacher and principal.  He worked for the Harlingen and San Benito school districts and retired after 37 years of service.
He traveled weekends to the University of Houston earning his master’s degree in education.  He and his family were very proud of this accomplishment.
He loved taking pictures of his family and worked hard to get them sorted into books for each of his children as a keepsake.  He loved sharing his pictures.
Gordon had been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen since January, 1951 where he served as Sunday School teacher, Boy Scout committee and many other church groups.
Gordon was a past member of the Rotary Club of Harlingen.  He was involved in many professional teacher organizations.
Perhaps his greatest accomplishment and love were his children and grandchildren.  He was involved in their activities and traveled with grandma Margie many miles to support them regardless of how far or long they had to travel.  He loved to drive Joy and DeeAndra to their many activities, especially to the snow cone stand with DeeAndra.  It was a joy to him to share in the fun of being a grandfather.  It kept him very young and full of life.
There are many adopted grandchildren whom he loved very deeply.  He loved children and working with them.  He always saw great potential in every person he met and encouraged each person to be the best they could be.
Gordon was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, his father, Gordon and mother, Florence, brother Joe, and sister Allene.
Gordon is survived by his children, Gordon (Linda), Greg (Dani), and Gerald (Hilda).  He is also survived by sister Emma Frances Hearen.
He is survived by grandchildren, Adrian, Shanna, Christopher, Stephanie, Brittanie, Victoria “Joy”, DeeAndra, Brad (Louise Le), Paul (Jessica), Daniel (Melody), Rebekah (Glenn), Rachel (Jeff), and Andrew.
Great-grandchildren, Brendan, Julia, Carolina, Haleigh, Kylie, Ayden, Sean, Ella, and Soren also survive him.
Special thanks to the doctors, and chaplains at Valley Baptist who so lovingly cared for our dad in his last hospitalization.  We are especially grateful to the nurses on the Stroke Unit who served above and beyond the call of duty.  Special thanks to Dr. Brian O’Donnell for his loving support, prayers and care of our dad.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, December 5 from noon to 9:00pm at the Buck Ashcraft funeral home, 710 Ed Carey Drive, Harlingen TX.  The family will receive friends from 4:00pm until 6:00pm.
A service celebrating Gordon’s life and faith will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 321 E Harrison Street, Monday, December 6, 2010 at 10:00 Am.  There will be a reception following the service in the fellowship hall.              .
Burial with full military honors will follow the reception at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito at 2:00pm.
Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
