Gertrude W. Griffin

February 18, 1915 — July 15, 2011

Harlingen/Quanah, TX:
Gertrude Word Griffin was born February 18th, 1915 in Groesbeck, Texas to Edna Mae and Frank Allen Word. Most of her life was spent in Quanah, Texas until moving to Harlingen, TX three years ago.
She went to be with her Lord in the early hours of July 15th, 2011. Gertrude is survived by her daughter Trudy Walkup-Kretz (Don), daughter-in-law Susan Griffin and six grandchildren, Traci Green, Todd Griffin, Lee Griffin (Wendi), Shelley Day, Scott Griffin (Tracey) and Kara Smith (Walker). She also had eleven great grandchildren that she adored.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd S. (Cracker) Griffin, son Ricky Span Griffin, son-in-law Don Walkup, brothers Robert Word, Forest Word, Marvin Word and sisters Nora Becknell and Jessie Hatcher.
Because of her love of fashion, Gertrude worked at Watkins in Quanah for many years. She was a devoted member of the Quanah Church of Christ and more recent the Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ. She loved cooking for others, keeping an immaculate house and wearing her “high-heeled” shoes.
While living in Harlingen she resided at Canterbury Gardens where she made many friends, always dressed in style and was crowned Valentine Sweetheart.
The last few months of her life were spent in her daughter’s home under the care of CIMA hospice. She took great pride in watching her great-grandchildren Parker (7) and Sadie (3) Smith play “hunting “ in the backyard, doctor, school, tea party and dress up. She was a spunky lady that will greatly be missed.
A celebration of Gertrude’s life will be held this Saturday July 23rd, 20011 at 2 p.m. at the Eight and Harrison Church of Christ.
A Memorial service will be held on August 6th in her hometown of Quanah, TX.
The family requests that memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to the Quanah Church of Christ, 801 S. Main St., Quanah, Texas 79252-4753.
