Harlingen, TX:
Gertrude E. Greenfeld, 99, passed away January 19, 2011. She was married to Harry Greenfeld and together they raised four children. She took great pride in her children and she and Harry stayed very busy running a dry goods business while raising their family. Gertrude, a woman of integrity, provided a shining example of how to be a lady, wife, mother and businesswoman all at the same time. Gertrude and Harry were one of several families instrumental in establishing Temple Beth Israel in Harlingen. The Temple was fortunate to have had Gertrude serve as president of the Sisterhood and superintendent of the Sunday School.
Later in life she became a substitute teacher popular with both students and administration.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Harry N. Greenfeld.
She is survived by all four of her children, Nanette Shafer (Phil) of E. Grandby, Connecticut; Janie Polunsky (Elliott) of Houston, Texas; Sheila Greenfeld of Harlingen and Sam Greenfeld (Renee) of Harlingen. Also surviving her are 10 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank all of the ladies that helped Gertrude endure the health challenges she faced in recent years. Her most recent caregivers, Ruby Reyes and Natalia Briones, deserve the family’s love and gratitude. Words cannot adequately express our thanks. We appreciate and wish to thank the staff of Harlingen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and CIMA Hospice. Finally, thank you to Ed Oorjitham, M.D. for being both doctor and friend to Gertrude for many years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Gertrude Greenfeld to Temple Beth Israel, P.O. Box 3398, Harlingen, Texas 78551 or to a charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen or you may leave a message at www.buckahscraft.com. Gertrude’s wishes were for a private family service.
