Corpus Christi, TX:
George H. Yarrington, 85, passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2013 in Harlingen, TX due to a fight with cancer.
George was born June 26, 1928 in Ogden, Utah to Herbert and Merle Hale Yarrington. After graduating from high school, he went to Montana where he was a cowboy. George was the 5th generation to serve his country including his father who served in WWI and older brother Carl who died in Normandy on D Day June 6, 1944.
He proudly served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard and retired after 30 years of service with the rank of CWO4.  His last command was with the Oklahoma City Search and Rescue at the Coast Guard Institute.
George became a “Texan” serving as commander of the Coast Guard station in Port Aransas, Texas from Jan. 1970 till late 1973. After hurricane Celia destroyed the station on Aug 3, 1970, George was greatly responsible for relocation and erection of the existing station. His dedication and services there made him a legend.
After retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard he was employed by the City of Corpus Christi Water Filtration Department. George was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
George loved the beauty of this country. He also loved to travel.  Each summer, no matter where he was stationed, he took his family west to visit family.  Driving across this country both remote and popular locations were visited. A wealth of memories is still held by his daughters today.  Helen taught her daughters to love of the Lord and George taught his daughters  love of the country.
He is survived by his daughters, Londa Lynn Fisher and her husband Fred Fisher and their sons Brent, Kevin and Scott of Oklahoma City, OK and Kelly Ann Bowers and her husband, Bryan Burton Bowers and their sons, Bryan II and Arlan of Harlingen, Texas. He will be greatly missed by his friends Elba Rubio, Fellow members of the Robstown VFW Post #7841 who knew him as “Laughing George” and also close friends at O’Briens in Corpus Christi.
George was preceded in death his wife, Helen Simons Yarrington.
