George Wayne Elder

George Wayne Elder was born September 27, 1925, and was made a child of God through Holy Baptism. On October 17, 2011 George passed away at a local nursing home and the promise of eternal life was fulfilled.
Born in Burlington, Iowa, George attended the University of Kansas and the U.S. Naval Flight School at Pensacola, FL, where he was awarded the United States Navy Trainer Award during World War II. He married Odessa “Dannie” Danford on January 17, 1945, and they resided in Littleton, Colorado and later moved to San Antonio, TX. George and Dannie moved to Harlingen in 1954, where George was employed with Southwestern Sales. George later worked for Round Tire, GCR until he retired in 2005.
George was a faithful Christian who served Jesus with his whole heart. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen where he served faithfully as an Elder for many years. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and playing hand bells and is now making sweet music in Heaven. George always had a smile on his face and was well known for his humor and practical jokes. He loved his family dearly and watched over them each and every day. George had many hobbies; he was a little-league baseball coach and was well known for his enthusiasm for building and flying remote control airplanes.
George is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Karol and Edward Hogan of Keller, TX; son and daughter-in-law: Jerry and Kathy Elder of Broomfield, CO; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Peggy Elder of Harlingen, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Bethany and Harry Headrick of Longview, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Brenda Elder of Harlingen, TX; granddaughter, Kelly Hogan Dames and husband John, granddaughter, Stephanie Hogan; grandson, Geoff Elder and wife Callie of Brighton, CO; grandson, Gerry Elder of Westminster, CO; grandson, Jon Elder; granddaughter, Leslie Headrick; granddaughter, Erin Elder Bazan and husband Justin; grandson, Landon Headrick; granddaughter, Jayme Elder; and grandson, Bryan Elder. His great grandchildren are Alex and Andrew Dames, Kylie and Gunner Elder, and Lexi Elder.
Mr. Elder was preceded in death by his wife Dannie in 1998, a son, Geoffrey Elder in 1968; daughter-in-law, Donna Elder of Broomfield, CO in 1995; and an infant granddaughter, Kimberly Dawn Elder in 1984.
The pallbearers will be Kenny Moore, Bryan Elder, Gerry Elder, Robert Carter, Raymond Carter, Jr. and H.W. (Bill) Card, III.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen.
Services will be Thursday, October 20, at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Nathan Wendorf officiating.
Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park with full military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 205. The family will receive friends at a reception in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Parish Hall following the burial.
