George Fleming Campbell

August 24, 1925 — July 17, 2011

HARLINGEN, TX:
George Fleming Campbell, 85, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, was called to his Heavenly home on Sunday, July 17, 2011.  He was born August 24, 1925, to Fred and Dora Campbell of Eaton, Colorado.  At his mother’s knee he learned to love Jesus and as a young boy asked Jesus into his heart.
George grew up in Eaton where he learned to love farming.   He graduated from Eaton High School.  During his senior year of high school he was named the Colorado FFA Star Farmer for his innovative farming ideas.   He later would be named the Iowa Soybean Grower of the Year (1967) after conceiving the idea for planting soybeans like sugar beets.  He was one of the first in Iowa to plant soybeans in 20” rows rather than 40” rows.  He married Florence Wright in 1947.  They farmed together in Eaton, Osage, Iowa, and Salix, Iowa before retiring in 1990 to Harlingen, TX.
George lovingly cared for Florence for 62 years before her death in 2010.  George was also preceded in death by his parents; brother, Merle Campbell; and sisters, Verna Franklin, Louise Brown, and Winifred Golden.
He is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Sue and Bill Daily of Mishawaka, IN and Cindy and Roland Weber of Springdale, AR; six grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson (Josh), John Cobb, Beth Aguirre (Daniel) all of IN, Steven Weber (Mariah) of NC, Scott Weber (Heide) of HI, and Robert Weber of AR; five great grandchildren, Lily, Timothy, and William Johnson, and Braden and Brooke Weber.  He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  He was lovingly cared for during the last years of his life by Nora Zavala and Rosa Dominguez and others for whom the family is deeply grateful.
A celebration of George Campbell’s life will be held on Monday, July 18, 2011 at 2 PM
at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.
Memorials may be sent to Odyssey Healthcare or Combes Baptist Church.
