Gavino Barrera, 51, passed away peacefully November 16, 2024, in San Benito, Texas. He was born February 15, 1973, in Brownsville, Texas to Mauro T. and Odilia Barrera.
Gavino devoted himself to serving his country with the U.S. National Guard and pursued higher education at the University of Texas at Brownsville. With a Class A CDL, he built a successful career as a truck driver for over 33 years, including employment with Saia Freight for the past year. He was also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen.
Outside of his professional life, Gavino had a passion for barbecuing and took great pride in his trucks, guns, boots, and hats. Above all, he cherished spending time with his son, Gavin, enjoying walks and sharing special moments together.
Gavino is preceded in death by his father, Mauro Barrera, and sister, Lourdes Barrera. He is survived by his children, Gavin Barrera, Ethan Cerda, and Dylan Cerda, along with their mother, Vanessa Rodriguez; his mother, Odilia Barrera; and his siblings: Emilio Barrera, Jose Luis "Pepe" Barrera, Mauro Alberto Barrera, Rosa Esthela Barrera, Luis Alberto "Beaver" Barrera, and Lorena Aleida Barrera. He is also remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
The Barrera family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, November 22, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A prayer service will begin at 7 o’clock Friday evening. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Following the service, Gavino will be laid to rest at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Luis Alberto Barrera, Luis Alejandro Barrera, Mauro A. Barrera, Julian Barrera, Aiden Barrera, Gabriel Munoz, Rene Mares, and Ethan Cerda. Honorary pallbearers will be Gavin Barrera, Emilio Barrera, Jose L. Barrera, and Matthew Barrera.
