Gary White

Gary M. White, 95, passed away Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence in Harlingen, TX. He was born in Washington, D.C. on December 18, 1917; the son of Alfred Gary White and Enid Marguerite Saecker White.
Gary graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1935 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from Swarthmore College, PA. in 1939.
In 1939 Gary was employed by E. I. Du Pont de Nemours & Co. at the Repauno Works, Gibbstown, New Jersey.
Between May 16, 1944 and May 11, 1946 Gary served in the U.S. ArHarlingenmy, mostly in the Engineer Detachment assigned to the Manhattan Project (Atomic Bomb) at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. His rank on discharge was Sergeant T/3.
On June 10, 1946 he rejoined Du Pont at the Birmingham Works, Alabama, and worked there until 1949 as Acid Supervisor/Acid Superintendent. He married Mary Elizabeth Hunt of Albertville, Alabama on July 5, 1947 while there.
Gary had a distinguished career with DuPont and served with Du Pont for over 37 years ending his career in Chile and Mexico.  He retired on December 31, 1976.
Upon retirement, he and his wife Mary moved to their summer cottage in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. Desiring a “place in the sun” they moved to McAllen, Texas in 1978, and volunteered at the Museum of South Texas History and church related activities. They were “Snow Birds” and split time between McAllen and the North woods of Wisconsin. Later, they retired permanently at The Golden Palms in Harlingen, TX.
Though they had no children, they had volunteered with the Salvation Army in Chile and got to know 2 orphaned girls there. They enrolled the girls in a Methodist school and both became bilingual secretaries, one in Spain and the other in France.
Gary was an avid golfer and member of the First United Methodist Church.  Also, Gary served as sextant for the Chapel in the Pines in Three Lakes, Wisconsin for about 10 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Mary Elizabeth Hunt White on August 31, 2011, as well as his brother David A. White on November 23, 2004, as well as his nephew Jeff White.  Gary is survived by his sister-in-law Hester White, nephews Jon White and Dan White, and niece Jenni Wolfe. Gary is also survived by his brother Robert C White and sister-in-law Mimi White, nephews Robert White Jr. and Kip White, nieces Louise Eshelman, and Jan White, and many friends and extended family.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held in the Texas Room at the Golden Palms Retirement Center, Harlingen, Texas, at 2:00PM, Saturday, February 23, 2013, with the Rev. David Mann officiating.
