HARLINGEN, TX. — Frank E. Shepard, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away on January 10, 2009. Frank was born July 17, 1927 in Knoxville, Tennessee to Edward Everet Shepard and Margaret Baise Shepard. He was raised in Maryville, Tennessee where he earned the rank of eagle scout.
He attended Duke University before serving in the 11th Airborne United States Army in Japan as a paratrooper. After his service in the Army, he attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville before attending and graduating from the University of Tennessee in Memphis with a dental degree in 1952 and an advanced degree in orthodontics in 1954. While in dental school, he was honored to be chosen as a member of the Odontological Honor Society, Omicron Kappa Upsilon, and Psi Omega Dental Fraternity.
In 1954, he moved to Harlingen and went into orthodontic practice with Dr. John Owens. His son Stephen joined him in practice in 1979. For 54 years, Frank continued his orthodontic practice and enjoyed creating beautiful smiles and wonderful memories for his patients. He was a lifetime member of the Texas Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontics.
In 1955, he married Helen Parker and they continued to live in Harlingen for 53 years. He was a member of the Harlingen Airport Board and was involved with moving the airport from Harvey Richards Field to its present location. Frank was a member of the Confederate Air Force, Harlingen Country Club, Life Begins at 40, and St. Alban’s Episcopal Church. He loved to hunt and fish and spend special times on his ranch with his friends and family.
Frank learned to fly in order to make trips back to Tennessee to visit family. His love of flying took him and his family on many wonderful adventures across the United States and Mexico.
Frank was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife Helen, son Robert (Anne) Shepard of Harlingen, son Stephen (Suzanne) Shepard of Harlingen, daughter Beth (Charles) Stewart of Round Top, daughter Annette (Jon) Bender of Dallas, grandchildren Susan and Margaret Shepard, Carl and Brian Shepard, Meg Stewart, Parker Bender, Michael, Kirk and Brian Ashy, his sister Frances Shepard Reid, and his sister-in-law Jan Shepard. He is also survived by great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many dear friends.
After a private burial, a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 11:00 AM at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 1417 East Austin, in Harlingen.
Pallbearers will be Bob Boggus, Tommy Curtis, Tommy Dismukes, Bob Hawkins, Pete Moore, Gary Tate, Bob Wright, and Rob Youker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Boggus, Jack Dempsy, John Ferris, Bill Guthrie, Royce McEver, and Kenneth Weaver.
