Fern Matz, 85, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2006 in San Antonio, TX.  Fern was born July 6, 1921 in Antlers, OK to Benjamin and Bessie Simpson.
She was a bookkeeper for Harlingen Consolidated School District and Sunny Glen’s Children Home.  She was a volunteer at Valley Baptist Medical Center after retirement until her recent move to San Antonio.  Fern was active in the Harlingen Community Concert Association and coordinator of the Memorial Fund for Grace Lutheran Church.  She enjoyed bunco, crochet, quilting, traveling and gardening.
Fern is survived by her children, Anna (Charles) Bryan of San Antonio and Martha (Keith) Nath of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Collin and Arron Bryan, Craig, Kyle and Kim Nath; one brother, Lucian Simpson of San Antonio; and sisters, Lois Goad of San Benito and Ruth Phillips of Harlingen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin R. Matz.
Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4, 2007 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2007, 10 a.m., at Grace Lutheran Church, 1001 E. Jackson in Harlingen with Rev. Kathryn Cox officiating.  Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Collin and Arron Bryan, Craig, Kyle and Kim Nath.  Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck E. Bothwell, Frank Matz Jr., Ed Bauer, James Matz, and Carl Lee Tanberg.
For those desiring to do so, memorial donations may be made to the Grace Lutheran Church.
