Eva Fisch

June 18, 1914 — March 26, 2008

Harlingen, TX:
Eva Rotner Fisch died Wednesday morning, March 26, after a brief illness. She was 93 years old. Eva was born in Beacon, New York, the first of 4 children of Nathan and Tillie Rotner. Her parents were part of the wave of immigration that brought millions to our shores from Eastern Europe in the first years of the 20th century. Her father was a tailor, and Eva helped in his shop and learned bookkeeping to manage his business. In 1943 she married Nathan Fisch. Eva raised 2 children as a stay-at-home mom. When her children were in high school, she went to work with Nathan in his clothing store. After they retired in 1971, they remained at home in upstate New York. Finally, in 1993, after a particularly cold winter, they agreed to move to South Texas and reside near children and grandchildren.
Eva was tirelessly devoted to her family, very stubborn, and very persistent. While she insisted that her husband have his check-ups and annual flu shot, she refused these for herself. She refused knee surgery for severe arthritis because it would have meant not being able to look after Nathan during the extended recovery. When Nathan died in 2002, they had been married 59 years. Afterwards, Eva continued living in her own home and only reluctantly accepted assistance in her daily activities. Until the last few weeks of her life, she went out almost daily to walk, shop and have lunch with her dear friends, Harold and Rita.
Memory of Eva will be a blessing for family and friends: Stanley and Nivia Fisch and sons Nathan and Harold; Abby and Tom Seemann and sons Arron and Eli; sister Minnie Wishner; devoted helpers Norma Lozoya and Olivia Juarez; and her many friends in the congregation of Temple Beth Israel and the Harlingen community at large.
Graveside services only will be held Thursday, March 27, 2008, 4 p.m., at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
May we suggest, instead of flowers, memorial donations be offered to Temple Beth Israel (Harlingen), the Salvation Army, or Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund International.
