Harlingen, TX:
Eva Meador Carter was born on September 19, 1921 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She was the only child of Edward Harmon Meador and Bessie Ruth Fullen. Having lost her father at age nine, Eva was raised by her mother in Hattiesburg.
She attended college at University of Southern Mississippi for two years. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Eva enrolled in the University of Tennessee School of Nursing in Memphis. She met and fell in love with a senior medical student, Samuel Cutter Carter, Jr. Three months later after his graduation, Dr. and Mrs. Sam Carter were married in March 30, 1943.
After a year in Boston, time in Mississippi and Memphis, Sam and Eva moved to Harlingen. It was difficult for Eva to leave her beloved Memphis, but quickly aspired to new goals once in the valley. She told her children it was all right to fail Texas History and became determined to build a two-party political system in the state. She developed rallies, went door-to-door and distributed bumper stickers. Eva was Chairman of the Republican Party of Cameron County and hosted many politicians who campaigned here.
Eva traveled extensively with Sam, often with family and friends. Trips led to Europe, Asia, Central and South America. There were many special times in the private plane visiting Alaska, Canada, Mexico, New York, Yellowstone National Park and other beautiful places.
Eva leaves us with so many fond memories of cooking for St. Albans Antique sale, working with the Confederate Air Force and involvement with the P.E.O. She firmly believed in “broadening your horizons” by taking her children, grandchildren, and others on educational adventures to the New York World’s Fair, New Orleans, Mexico, Disneyland and state conventions. She taught bridge to teenagers and was an avid seamstress.
She leaves behind her husband, Samuel Cutter Carter, MD; son, Samuel Cutter Carter, III; a daughter, Cissy Duane (Patrick) and daughter, Beth Carter Cantini. Grandchildren are Kendra Carter, David H. Rotter, MD (Ann), Jennifer Rotter, Russell C. Cantini and Ryan Kendrick Cantini. Great grandchildren are Nathan, Trent, and Andrew Rotter.
