Ester Meza, peacefully passed from this life on August 29, 2020 at 87 years of age. She was born to the late Antonio and Carmen Alvarez Meza on May 3, 1933 in Las Yescas, Texas.
At a very young age, as a field laborer helping her parents, Ester learned the value of hard work. As an adult, her cooking and entrepreneurial spirit led her to own and co-own several businesses including the Glass Café in Harlingen, Texas.
Ester found great joy in cooking special meals for her thirteen children, for her extended family, and for family friends. She made every Christmas extra special with the delicious tamales that she lovingly made and shared with her family and friends. Ester also loved to dress up. Her outfits were not complete without a coordinating scarf, hat, and sunglasses, red lipstick, and her favorite perfume. Ester also enjoyed shopping for good deals at area flea markets, trying her luck on the “maquinitas”, and playing Chalupa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Antonio and Carmen A. Meza; her sons, Wualberto Tijerina and Luis Meza, Jr.; daughter, Pat Cortez; four brothers and three sisters.
Left to treasure Ester’s memory are her children Janie (Larry) Gonzalez, Jesusa (Juan, Sr.) Martinez, Nelda Almazan, Jesus Tijerina, Jr., Lisa (Roy, Sr.) de Leon, Gracie (Mando) Duarte, Yolanda (Robert,Sr.) Soliz, Jimmy Cortez, Cindy Cortez, and JoAnn Meza; 45 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren, and 7 great great-grandchildren.
