Ernesto P. Martinez

HARLINGEN, TX. – Ernesto P. Martinez, age 71, of Harlingen, Texas, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. He was born to Luis and Carmen Martinez on August 9, 1943.

Ernesto was a member of the United States Army Reserve and retired after 33 years of service. He was a member of the 812th Battalion located in Harlingen, Texas. He also worked for and retired after 32 years of service at South Texas State Hospital.

He enjoyed playing pool, dancing, cooking, fishing, getting together with friends and family, and supporting his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all of their activities whether big or small. He was an avid Harlingen Cardinal and Dallas Cowboys football fan.

His parents; brothers, Esiquio P., Luis P. Jr., Apolonio P., and Roberto P. Martinez; sisters, Dolores P. Martinez, Rosa M. Flores, and Martha Rivera; and mother-in-law, Juanita C. Garza, precede him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Juanita “Janie” Martinez; children Judy Lin (Jeff) Talbert, Velma Martinez (Chris Ortiz), and Ernie, Jr. (Melissa) Martinez; fourteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his siblings Samuel P. Martinez, Juana Ramos, Carmen Rivera, Hortencia Castillo, Eloisa (Gregorio) Martinez, and Arturo P. (Maria) Martinez; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M. on Friday, January 16, 2015, with a prayer service scheduled for seven o’clock Friday evening within the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

A chapel service will commence on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at two o’clock in the afternoon. Interment will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito with military honors to be conducted at the graveside under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars # 1035.

Pallbearers will be Arturo Martinez, Fabian Martinez, Fermin Garza, Marcelino Sanchez, Chris Ortiz, and Felix De Leon. Ernest Martinez, Jr., Isaac Martinez, and Samuel Martinez will serve as honorary pallbearers.
