SAN BENITO, TX. – Ernesto “Ernie” Alvarez Jr, 71, of Sugar Grove, loving husband of Rachel (Torres) Alvarez, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2015 at Presence Mercy Hospital in Aurora, Illinois.  He was born August 30, 1943 in Raymondville, Texas.

Ernie was employed as a Quality Analyst at Caterpillar for 36 years until his retirement in 2003. He was a member of U.A.W. Local Union #145 for many years. As a young man, Ernie played and coached baseball in the Aurora City and Tri-State Leagues at S.A. Field and in Yorkville at the Bungalow. He was a huge fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Dallas Cowboys. Ernie was an Army veteran of Viet Nam.

Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Rachel Alvarez; his son, Ernesto “Little Ernie” Alvarez III; his grandson, Enrique “Qui-Que” Alvarez; his adopted daughter-in-law and mother of his grandson, Nilda Zuber; his step-granddaughter, Naome Zuber; his sister, Elma Alvarez of Houston, TX; his brother, Robert Alvarez of Oceanside, CA; his nieces and nephews, Brad McClure, Dex Riley, Miranda Alvarez, Alexis Burham and Derek Alvarez; his half-sisters, Prisella Ambriz and Dina Garcia both of Texas; his loving mother and father-in-law, Moni and Rod Rodriguez; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Toni (Valdo) Gomez, Irene (Mauro) Gonzalez, Enrique (Chefi) Torres Jr., Beda (Noe) Hernandez, Mary Jane (Albert) Mata and Debra Torres; his aunts, Gloria (Manuel) Becerra, Maria “Chole” La Fon and Irma Gibbs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto Alvarez, Sr. and Evangeline Ambriz; his nephew, Bobby Alvarez; and his great niece, Lauren Klespitz.

Visitation will be held between the hours of 2:00 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, with recitation of the holy rosary scheduled for seven o’clock Tuesday evening within the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at ten o’clock in the morning in Our Lady, Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, 1425 North Sam Houston Boulevard. Committal services will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park with military honors to be conducted at the gravesite under the auspices of the Veterans of Foreign Wars # 2035.
