Ernest Gene Catlett, 85, passed away on Monday, April 12, 2010 at his residence.
Gene was born on April 11, 1925 in Meridian, Mississippi to Ernest George and Nona Cross Catlett. He married Mamie Jo (Sandy) Catlett on June 5, 1948 to whom he was married for 53 years. Gene proudly served his country with the U.S. Army from January 15, 1946 until his Honorable Discharge on January 14, 1949. He graduated from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1948 and received his Law Degree from Tulane University on June 5, 1950. Gene was an independent oil operator and was a founder of Peltex Petroleum Company and was a partner of Catlett & Ferguson, and a partner in MP Petroleum Company.
He was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter and loved to dance. He loved life, family and friends. He was a longtime member of Lakeside Country Club and the Petroleum Club in Houston. Gene was also a member of Rancho Viejo and the Elks Club in Brownsville.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mamie Jo (Sandy) Catlett and his brother, John Catlett.
He is survived by his daughter Cindy Catlett of South Padre Island and his adorable twin daughters, Debra and Donna Catlett of Houston; his sister Lois Warren and husband Earl Warren of Phoenix; grandchildren, Adam and Michelle Bezverkov and Matthew Wagner; and great granddaughter, Alena Katherine Bezverkov. Also surviving Gene are his brothers-in-law, Richard Sandefur and Earl Sandefur and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010, at 2 p.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Rev. David Mann officiating. There will be a reception at the Casa Grande Room at Rancho Viejo from 3-5pm.
