Enrique Lucio, 93, of San Benito, passed away peacefully and in the company of his family on May 2, 2017.
The son of Juan and Augustina Sanchez Lucio, he was born in San Benito on December 30, 1923.
Enrique left school early to work as a field laborer in order to support his brothers and sisters. In 1943, at the height of WWII and at the age of 19, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He was assigned to the 4th Combat Cargo Group 349th Airdrome Squadron and deployed overseas as part of the China Burma India Theater campaign. After the war, he served briefly as a Military Police Officer before returning home in 1946.
Upon returning to San Benito, he continued working as a field laborer until finding employment as a maintenance mechanic at the Texas State Chest Hospital where he worked until his retirement in 1986. Not one to sit idle, he soon returned back to work as a bus driver for the San Benito school district, finally retiring once again at the age of 76.
In 1955, he married the former Susana Martinez who remained by his side until the end. Enrique will be remembered for his sense of humor, his war stories, solving Sudoku puzzles and, most importantly, spending time with his grandkids.
He is preceded in death by his eldest son, Eulogio Lucio, his parents, brothers Juan, Jr., Pedro, Benito and Jose Lucio and sister, Marcela Mendiola.
Enrique is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susana Lucio; sons, Enrique Lucio, Jr., Gilbert (Lourdes) Lucio, Eddie Lucio, Eloy (Melinda) Lucio; daughters, Paulina (Ernesto) Bejaran, Elena (Guadalupe) Garza, Gloria (Carlos) Amador, Elida Mendoza (Fred Aragus); his siblings, Antonia Nino and Julian Lucio; along with 24 Grandchildren, 46 Great Grandchildren and 5 Great Great Grandchildren; as well as many close and devoted friends.
Visitation will begin Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 5, 2017 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
