Elvia Gómez, age 89, entered into eternal rest comfortably on Thursday, August 15th, on the Feast of the Assumption, in Harlingen, Texas surrounded by her loving family.
She is preceded in death by her son Juan F. Gomez, her parents Isaac and Cecilia Martinez; her in-laws Luciano and Maria Gomez, and by her brother Raul Martinez.
Elvia is survived by her husband of 70 years Francisco Gomez; by her daughters Alma Sylvia (Arnold) Garcia, Nelda (Enrique "Henry") Cruz, Lourdes Gomez; and by her son Javier (Norma) Gomez; her grandchildren Ariel (J.D.) Vela, Clarissa Gomez, Noah Gomez, Nicholas Gomez, and Nathan Gomez. She is also survived by her siblings Isaac (Delia) Martinez, Olga Moreno, Abundia (Adan) Jalomo, and San Juana Thompson and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elvia was born on January 31, 1935 in San Benito, Texas. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister. She lived in the El Jardín neighborhood of San Benito. As a child she would work in the fields and later she would pack vegetables and shrimp. She helped her husband run a small store across the street from Frank Roberts elementary. She then began to bake cakes from her home with her decorating partner, Ana Conde.
She was a devout Catholic and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Community. It was important for her to instill faith in all her children and grandchildren, she made sure that they attended mass every Sunday and religious education classes. She also made sure that they would regularly attend daily rosaries during the month of May. She served her church community by being a Eucharistic minister and by helping out in the kitchen during the annual church kermés. As part of her devotion to her faith she prayed the rosary nightly and made sure to include others in her prayers.
When Elvia began to show signs of Alzheimer’s it was difficult for her to continue helping with the church. During this time she relied heavily on her family. We know that our Mom/Grandma is no longer under that cloud and she is rejoicing in eternal life in heaven.
The family would like to thank Yvette Cano of Treasure Hills Residential Care Homes and all her caregivers that made Elvia comfortable during her last days.
