Elinor Ruth Silstorf, 91, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2014 at her residence in Palm Valley. Elinor was born February 11, 1923 to Clyde and Gertrude Sutliff Duncan. She attended and graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1941. She was described in her high school yearbook as “Dance Girl Dance”.
Elinor met and fell in love with Elwyn “Sil” Silstorf while he was home on leave from Great Lakes Naval Training School at Chicago Navel Pier. They married in 1942 and then reported for duty at the Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. While in Corpus, Elinor was active with other Navy wives and began working at 6-Point area in Corpus.
After returning to Adrian, Michigan in December of 1945, their union brought a daughter, Sandra and a son, Gregg into the world. In 1952 they moved to Harlingen and purchased Mont Meta Cemetery. In years to come they also purchased Restlawn and
Combes Cemeteries. While working with her husband in the operation of the cemeteries, Elinor found times to chair the March of Dimes Mother’s March, Coterie Club. She and her husband were active members of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 and she became a life member. They enjoyed socializing with their friends at dance night.
In 1978 they purchased a home in Arroyo City and became active members of the Boat and Ski Club in which her husband, Sil, became the Commodore. Elinor and Sil were great fishermen and enjoyed fishing in the Arroyo and South Padre Island bay area. After her husband death, Elinor moved to Las Provincias Condominium in Palm Valley and made many lifelong friends. She took great pride in being voted the “Yard Lady” of the condo and it flourished under her watchful eye.
Preceding Elinor in her death were her parents, Clyde and Gertrude Duncan; her husband, Sil; her son, Gregg and her sister, Natalie Wattersworth. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Selman of Manchaca, Texas, and her brother, Clyde and his wife, Patty of Toledo, Ohio. She is also survived by her long-time friend, Earl Sprague and her daughter-in-law, Cathy Silstorf of Harlingen. Her grandchildren include Sha Calderon of Lockhart; Bart Selman of Hawaii, Lance Silstorf of Corpus Christi and Lisa Lozano of Dallas. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and many wonderful, devoted friends.
