Elena (Peña) Garcia

Elena P. “Nena” Garcia, 90, closed her eyes to this world and opened them to see the face of her Savior and Lord on January 14, 2021.  She was born to Eleno Peña and Isabel Cortez Peña on June 20, 1930 in Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico.

Elena only had 6 years of formal education, but she was an avid reader and kept up-to-date on current events.  She read her Bible daily, knew many scriptures by memory, and treasured God’s Word in her heart. She was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Church; however, many local Baptist churches where her children are members also considered Elena an honorary member.

She enjoyed attending church services, whistling hymns, singing, and had a passion for growing living things; she loved flowers, plants, and birds.  However, her greatest love was for her Lord and Savior, followed by her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Left to treasure her memory are Elena’s children, Rosendo (Emma) Garcia, Diana (Juan) Alvarado, Sara (Alberto) Morales, Arcelia (Antonio) Aguilar, María Elena G. Ramírez, Israel (Anna) Garcia, Dalia (Rey) Cantú, Jorge (Lilly) Garcia, Jaime (Patty) Garcia; and, grandchildren, Marina C. Herrera, Miriam de León, Rosendo Garcia III, Daniel Garcia, Laura Hernandez, Gabriel Garcia, Sara Beth Tucker, Paul Rojas, Jr., Isabel Morales, Johanna M. Ramírez, David Rojas, Rebecca Kazear, Melissa G.  Myers, Jennifer D. Ramírez, Daniel Aguilar, Brianna Garcia, Israel Garcia II, Noemí Cantú, Kristina Cantú, Caleb Garcia, Isaac Garcia, Karina Mia Montez, Aaron J. Garcia, Abram Garcia,  Isaiah Garcia, Nathan Garcia, John Nathaniel Garcia de León, and Lidiana Garcia; 24 great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Pablo Rojas, Sr.

Elena was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Rosendo Garcia Garcia and their daughters, Herlinda Garcia Rojas and Elizabeth Garcia.

The Garcia family wishes to express special thanks to Elena’s caregivers, Margarita Barrera and Annabell Coronado.  Also, to Dr. Reddi Feriza and Dr. Peter Lazzopina; the staff and administration of Mid-Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and deep gratitude to Nathan Garcia, P.A. at McAllen Medical Center E.R.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, January 17, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft San Benito Funeral Home.  A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 7 o’clock on Sunday evening. (Click the link below to view a live-stream of the Celebration of Life service.) Graveside service and interment will take place on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Honored to serve as pallbearers are Daniel Aguilar, Isaac Garcia, Marco D. Hernandez, Jorge Garcia, Joe Seth Ramírez-Pérez, and Isaiah Garcia.  Honorary pallbearers are Daniel Garcia, Isabel Morales, Paul Rojas, Jr., Noemi Cantú, Aaron Garcia, and John Nathaniel Garcia de León.
