Elena Ruth Cavazos Wolfe
Ruth Wolfe, 90, of Brownsville, Texas entered into eternal rest on Saturday, May 14, 2016. Ruth was born on August 18, 1925 in Brownsville, Texas to Amadeo and Bascilia Cavazos. Ruth was from a Valley pioneer family, being a direct descendant of Don Jose Narciso Cavazos, grantee of the San Juan de Carricitos land grant established in 1792 by the King of Spain.
Ruth was a lifelong resident of Brownsville, Texas. She graduated from Brownsville High School in 1942, received her Associate of Arts in 1944 from Brownsville Junior College, graduated from Texas A & I in Kingsville, Texas with a B.S. Degree in May of 1948 and received her advanced graduate standing from Trinity University, San Antonio, Texas in 1955. She continued her studies at The University of Houston, Texas where she received her Masters in Education in 1957.
Ruth was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on the board, participated in prayer groups and the sewing of prayer shawls. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Pan American Round Table.
Ruth was a beloved elementary school teacher who taught at Putegnat Elementary until her retirement. Given the years she spent teaching school and the affection she held for her pupils, in retirement there was not a place Ruth would go where a former student would not stop her to say "hello".
Ruth enjoyed sewing quilts with her mother and writing friends and family beautiful letters from her time spent in Iowa.
Ruth loved people, had many close friends whom she held dear and was a deeply loyal and devoted daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin and Godmother to her large and extended Cavazos family. Ruth said she fell deeply in love with her father, Amadeo Cavazos, when he faithfully walked her to kindergarten from their house every morning in west Brownsville before work.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents Nicolas and Francisca Garcia Cavazos; her parents Amadeo and Bascilia Cavazos; her husband, Allen J. Wolfe; and her aunts Estella Cavazos Holland and Francisca "Paquita" Trevino.
She is survived by Beatriz Trevino, Carolyn (Cernozek) and Homer Holland, General Richard Cavazos, Sylvia (Trevino) and Lucas Hinojosa, Barbara (Walsh) and Mike Trevino, Lauro Cavazos Phd., C. Stokely Holland, Gloria Ussery, John David Cavazos and Victor Cavazos. She will be deeply missed by her godchildren and cousins Hilarie (Holland) Garza, Heidi Holland, Heather Holland, Mario A. Garza and Natalia E. Garza.
Words cannot express the gratitude the family feels towards Francis Gray, Valley View Memory Care employees and Merida Home Health for the loving care and devotion given to Ruth.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Brownsville.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 19, 2016 from 12:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 20, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Buena Vista Cemetery, 5 McDavitt Blvd, Brownsville, Texas.
