Mary Elaine Lockhart (Elaine/Lanie/Admiral), 68, of Harlingen, died suddenly on Friday, November 18, 2016, at her home. She was born August 2, 1948, in Dallas, Texas, the daughter of Mary Helen Roberson and Marcus A. Hancock.
Lanie graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas with the class of 1966. She attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1970 with a degree in Education. While attending Tech in 1968, she met her future husband Tom (a.k.a. Poppy). The two married in 1972. The couple resided in Lubbock, Texas and Lanie taught at the Episcopal Day School from 1972-1974. Lanie and Poppy moved to Amarillo in 1975 and Lanie taught at the Episcopal Day School until 1979. The couple lost their first child during pregnancy in 1976. In 1977, Lanie gave birth to her daughter, Leslie A. Lockhart (Moody). In the Spring of 1979, the couple moved to Harlingen where Lanie taught at St. Alban’s Episcopal Day School until the birth of her son, Tommy A. Lockhart, Jr. (Tal) in 1981. Shortly after moving to the Valley, Lanie and Poppy fell in love with offshore fishing and purchased their first boat, The Defense Rests, in 1983. From this time forward, Lanie became better known to those in the fishing community as The Admiral. Throughout her fishing career, she caught several Blue Marlin and guided The Defense Rests and its crew to catch the State Record Blue Marlin on August 20, 1988, weighing in at 876.5 lbs.
Until her passing, Lanie was very active in her community, serving on many boards including, The Episcopal Church Women, Daughters of the King and the Altar Guild at St. Alban’s, Boys & Girls Club, The Harlingen Area Food Pantry, Valley Proud, Harlingen Proud, The Literacy Center, United Way of NCC, Kiwanis and numerous others.
She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Tom Lockhart of Harlingen; two children, Leslie (Cliff) Lockhart-Moody of Harlingen and Tal (Lisa Anderson) Lockhart of Harlingen; three grandchildren, Fisher Hollon, Hagan Hollon and Porter Moody; two fur-babies, Coco and Chuby as well as many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marcus Hancock, her mother, Mary Helen Gau, her sister, Marcia Bopp, her step-father, Al Gau, step-mother, Inez Hancock and her fur-babies, Trip, Tres, Marley, Spot and Bailey.
A Memorial in celebration of Lanie’s life will be held Saturday, December 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Harlingen, Texas, with a reception to follow.
