Elaine Higgins, 81 passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at her home in Harlingen, Texas.
Elaine was born to Dr. Rosel and Dorothy (Price) Seashore on October 8, 1936 in Duluth, Minnesota. Elaine graduated from East High School and then from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. After the children were grown, she graduated Cum Laude from Bemidji State University. She practiced as a Registered Nurse (RN) from 1958 until 1992 and worked in obstetric units, newborn nurseries, pediatric units, pediatric intensive care units and obstetrics/gynecology surgery.
Elaine played the piano and loved country music. She loved the outdoors and she would sit outside reading at home and at the cabin in northern Minnesota. She always laughed at how the hummingbirds would dive bomb her if the feeder was empty. Elaine welcomed everyone into her home and always had a story to tell. She didn’t know she was funny, but she was, and was often called the funny grandma. She could make you smile even when you didn’t feel like it. Elaine loved knitting and she especially enjoyed knitting Christmas stockings. The stockings she designed and individualized are cherished Christmas keepsakes.
Elaine was licensed in Adult Vocational Education and was active in the community serving on the Minnesota Nurses Association State Continuing Education Committee and the Minnesota League of Nurses Board of Directors. She was a member of Soroptimists International and received the Woman of the Year Award in 1982.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Rosel and Dorothy; her husband of 43 years, James; and her granddaughter Rebecca Perrault Conner.
She is survived by her children, Bill (Sue) Higgins, Kimball (Wendy) Higgins, Ken (Kristine) Higgins, Dorie Higgins (Wayne) Gilbert, Dawn Higgins, Kimberly Higgins (Richard) Pietrzak, Richard (Jo Haubrich) Higgins and Karen Higgins Saaf; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
