Edward Banks Irby

Edward Banks Irby passed away Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.  Ed was born in Mercedes, TX on January 16, 1920 to Edward Armstrong “Ned” Irby and Sarah Banks Irby.
A graduate of Mercedes High School, class of 1937, Ed went on to marry Mary Louise “Mazie” Johnston, of Weslaco in 1942.  Mazie and Ed celebrated 65 years of marriage.
Ed served in the Army Air Corps as a pilot.  Ed was affiliated with Valley Bearing Service in McAllen for over 25 years.  In 1973, he purchased Lewis Electric Motors in Harlingen and continued ownership until his retirement in 2001.
Ed was an active Elk in Harlingen and McAllen for over 30 years and held the office of Exalted Ruler. He is the past-president of the southwestern chapter of the Electrical Apparatus Service Association.  He is a longtime member and an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Mazie, who died in September 2008 and his sister Helen Mears of Baton Rouge, LA.
Ed is survived by his daughter, Mary Margaret “Peggi” Thomas and husband, Paul.  He is also survived by 2 grandsons, Brian Thomas (Melissa) of Kingsville and Steve Thomas (Carly) of Harlingen and a granddaughter Linnsey Thomas O’Connor (Jason) of Spring, Texas.  Also survived are 6 beloved great-grandchildren; Dylan, Caleb, Sadey, Macey and Wyatt Thomas and Pike Burns Thomas.
Visitation hours will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Friday, December 12, 2008 from 12pm-9pm with the family receiving friends from 5-7pm.  Funeral services will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen on Saturday, December 13th at 2 pm.  Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery in La Feria.
Pallbearers will be Paul Thomas, Brian Thomas, Steve Thomas, Jason O’Connor, Sam Moreno and Ted Flores.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Rio Grande Children’s Home, 3780 N. Bentsen Palm Drive, Mission, Texas 78574.
