Jean Armstrong Brown
HARLINGEN, TX: Jean Armstrong Brown passed away Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at her residence. She was born in Kokomo, Indiana, on May 8, 1923. Jean moved to Texas at an early age. She became a proud Texan and longtime resident of Harlingen, where she touched many people’s lives.
She was preceded in death by her son Gary Brown as well as four sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by daughter Renee Greenfeld (Sam) of Harlingen and son Doug Brown of Houston; daughter-in-law Sylvia Brown of Harlingen; brother Richard Armstrong (Lois) of Pearland; granddaughters Shelley Barden (Eric) of Austin, Jennifer Alsup (Patrick) of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Shawna Blair (Brandon) of Lyford; grandsons, Ryan Greenfeld of Harlingen and Derek Brown of Harlingen; and great-grandchildren Andrew, Devin and Emery Alsup, Grant and Wyatt Barden, and Cole and Grace Blair.
Jean started her career as a bank teller at Harlingen National Bank. Over the course of 30 years, she worked her way up to Assistant Vice President. In retirement, Jean remained active at her church, First Baptist Church of Harlingen, where she contributed her knack for numbers.
Aside from work and her volunteering, Jean was known for her quick wit, avid love of sports and creative spirit. She excelled in cross-stitching, knitting, sewing and crocheting. Anyone who visited her home knew how good she was in the kitchen, baking buttermilk pies and chocolate pies that were the talk of all family members. Family and friends were lucky enough to get the results of her labors.
But her greatest roles in life were of daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Jean raised three children and was completely involved in their lives while dutifully caring for her mother. She then threw herself into being a grandmother and later a great-grandmother. The way she impacted her family could be seen up until her final moments when her loving family surrounded her.
Jean was completely dedicated to her family but also made time for her many friends with whom she played cards, Bunco, Spinner and other games. Jean had a trail of friends she acquired over the years, touching people’s hearts wherever she went, and she cherished every single one of those people.
Jean will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and Ruby Reyes for their years of service and friendship. Shenkenberg was a dedicated doctor and helped ease the physical pain Jean endured later in her life. Ruby began as a caregiver but ended as a confidante and cherished friend to Jean through her final moments.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, from 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with the family present from 6 p.m.-8p.m. Private graveside services for family will be held Thursday morning. A memorial service open to all and celebrating Jean’s life will follow at 11 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
