Ed A. Goike

Ed A. "Candyman", 97, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Ed was born on September 5, 1909 in Gainesville, Texas to John and Ella Goike.  His family moved to Harlingen in 1923 and he worked at the Compress from then unitl 1934.  He then owned and operated Ed Goike Pump Service from 1941 until his retirement in 1989.  He was a veteran.

Ed was not only a longtime member, Deacon, and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, but was a dedicated and always available to help with anything the church needed.  He made deep impressions on the people he touched and left them smiling by handing out candy as a gesture of appreciation.

Ed is survived by a sister, Virginia Odile Rushing of San Diego, CA; nephew, Patrick Rushing also of San Diego, CA; nephew, Doug Goike and great nephews, Chris and Cullen Goike all of Round Rock, TX; niece, Mary Helen Jakl of Austin, TX and great nephews, Scott Jakl of Pearland, TX and Steven Jakl of Denton, TX; niece, Frances Sticher of Seabeck, WA; and his adopted family, Larry and Nancy Parrish of San Benito, John and Lisa Parrish of Harlingen, Jeff and Celeste Parrish of Glen Rose, TX, Jerry and Dayna Parrish of Harlingen, Mathew and Julie St. John of San Benito and 11 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Sandell Goike, sisters, Marie Saddoris and Irene Poole and brother, William Cornelius Goike.

Pallbearers will be Martin Brewer, John Parrish, Jerry Parrish, Scott Jakl, Bill Phillips and Tim Bowen.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Ted Brookshire and Dick Dunbar.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 402 E. Jackson, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
