Dr. Walter Edwards, 85, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.
Walter was born March 27, 1924 in Cleburne, Texas.  He attended and graduated from the Cleburne High School and then went on to attend TCU on a music scholarship. Walter also attended and graduated from Baylor Medical School in Houston. Dr. Edwards was the Director of Emergency Medical Services at Daniel Freeman Hospital in Inglewood, CA, where he established one of the first Trauma Centers.  He was one of the first physicians to practice and establish Emergency Medicine as a specialty. The California Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians gives an annual award in his name. Dr. Edwards proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII.  He enjoyed golfing and many years of traveling all over the US in his RV with his wife, Mary Jane.
Dr. Edwards was preceded in death by parents and his wife, Mary Jane Edwards.
He is survived by his daughter Gwynne (Randy) Fleener; son, Tom (Monica) Edwards; seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Visitation hours will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Monday, May 4, 2009 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 10 a.m. with Jake Vincent and Wayne Frase officiating.  Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the 8th & Harrison Church of Christ Worship Ministry, 801 E. Harrison St., Harlingen, TX 78550.
