Robert E. Krebs, 86, passed away on April 10, 2009 at Solara Hospital in Harlingen, TX.
Robert was born August 4, 1922 in Shippensburg, PA to Leslie C. Krebs and Anna E. Kline. Robert attended Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, PA and received a B.S. in 1948; he then attended the Western Maryland College in Westminster, MD and received a M.Ed. in 1952. In 1958 he received a Doctorate in Education from University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Robert proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army as an Advanced Surgical Technician stationed at Walter Reade Army Medical Hospital in Washington, DC and served at the 109th General Hospital in England.
Dr. Krebs was a lifelong educator, beginning as a biology and chemistry teacher before retiring as a university administrator. He also worked with NASA as a senior space science lecturer from 1961 to 1963; as a research coordinator and science specialist at the US Office of Education from 1963 to 1966. In 1965 while on leave from the Office of Education, he set up a series of science institutes in India as part of a joint program between Columbia University and USAID. He held several administrative posts in universities in New York, Washington State and Illinois, and retired in 1982 as the Associate Dean for Research of the Graduate College at the University of Illinois Health Sciences Center in Chicago. Upon retiring, Dr. Krebs headed his own consulting and software development company. When he and Mrs. Krebs moved to the South Padre Island area he began his final career as an author, as well as a series editor of science reference books. Eight of Dr. Krebs’ science reference books have been published since 1998.
Dr. Krebs was the president of the International Society of Research Administrators from 1982 to 1983; received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Shippensburg University in 2004; and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi fraternity since 1958. He enjoyed writing, woodworking, photography and traveling.
Dr. Krebs is survived by his wife, Carolyn Krebs; sons, Robert E. Krebs, Jr. (Jenny) of Florence, AL and Douglas R. Krebs (Melissa) of Fort Wayne, IN; daughter, Carol R. Kovach (William) of Wolcottville, IN; grandchildren, Kira Ann Krebs and Heather Powell of Fort Wayne, IN and Evan R. Kovach of Wolcottville, IN. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews of whom Uncle Bob was very fond and very proud.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jean Krebs Leary; and brothers, David A. Krebs and John L. Krebs.
A private memorial service for family and friends will be scheduled at a later date.
