HARLINGEN:
Dr. Jack Burkholder, 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 02, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center after a recent illness.
Jack dedicated his life to serving his patients and persons who were in need of his services as a dentist. Jack will be remembered as a true gentleman and a kind and friendly person who made everyone feel special.
Jack was born on Sept. 3, 1924 in Monmouth, Illinois to James R. Burkholder, PhD., and Esther Mae Gillander Burkholder. He attended Fresno State College before attaining his DDS degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in San Francisco in 1947. Jack practiced dentistry in Fresno, California, then moved to Houston, Texas, and became a Captain in the Air Force at Ellington AFB. In 1952, Jack moved to Harlingen where he opened his private practice. Jack continued to practice dentistry in Harlingen since 1952 and through his long career he provided needed dentistry services and oral surgical services to the poor in the border region. Jack continued to practice dentistry long past the usual retirement age because of his devotion and his compelling need to provide to those who could not afford dentistry. For many years, Jack devoted his time and skills to provide dentistry and oral surgery to under privileged children and handicapped individuals. Jack felt that he could not retire as long as these services went unprovided in the local area. Jack also loved people and lived for serving his patients and doing charitable work.
Jack was preceded in death by Monnie Burkholder, and grandsons Sean Michael, and Mark Burkholder. He is survived by his wife, Elsa Burkholder; sons, Michael (Belinda), Jim (Jane), and Oscar Burkholder; and grandchildren, Brandy (Ralph) Luna, John Burkholder, and great-grandchildren, Sean, Cybeon, and Trinity Luna. Also surviving are Jack’s sisters, Harriet (Cal) Wise, Jimmie (Dick) Seiler, and Francie (Dave) Griffin, all of Fresno, California.
The family would like to thank Dr. Indal Seudeal and Dr. Leslie Pean for their care and support.
