Anthony James Cavazos, M.D., 63, passed away on July 25, 2020 after a brief illness. He was born to the late Trinidad and Lillian Carranza Cavazos on October 28, 1956 in Azores, Portugal.
In his youth, Anthony attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement attainable in the Scouts BSA program of the Boy Scouts of America.
Anthony proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Gulf War. He attained the rank of Tech Sergeant and was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Armed Services Reserve Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal.
He attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and completed the rigorous course of studies for Médico Cirujano de La Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas. He was board certified in Family Medicine.
In his leisure time, Anthony enjoyed writing, stargazing, baseball, football, fishing, camping, and traveling with his family.
His parents, Trinidad and Lillian Cavazos, preceded Anthony in death.
Left to treasure Anthony’s memory are his loving wife, Julia Ann Cantu Cavazos; children, Michael Cavazos, Amanda C. Bazan, Marc Cavazos, Trinidad Cavazos, A. J. Poore, Andi Poore, Abraham Perez, Rachel Perez, Samuel Perez, Cassiopeia Cavazos, and David Cavazos; siblings, Paul Cavazos, Daniel Cavazos, Jesse Cavazos, John Cavazos, Diane Jones, and Adam Cavazos.
The Cavazos family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, August 2, 2020 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home. A detail of volunteers from Brownsville VFM Post 2035 will render Military Honors at 6:00 p.m. and a recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. Anthony will be laid to rest in a private ceremony on Monday, August 3, 2020 at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
The Cavazos family wishes to thank the VA, McAllen Heart Hospital and Eden, Anthony’s nurse in his final days, and all those who made a positive impact on him.
