Harlingen:
Dovie Lee Cummings Herkimer, “Mammaw”, 92, of Harlingen left this earth to be with her Savior on Thursday, February 17, 2011 after a brief hospitalization at Valley Baptist Medical Center of Harlingen.
Dovie Lee was born June 25, 1918 in Nevada County, Arkansas to Rufus and Delphia Cummings. Her family moved to Harlingen in 1929 where they worked in the farming industry. On January 30, 1937, she married Thomas C. Herkimer, Jr. in Harlingen. She worked as a general store clerk, an at-home babysitter, and as an office assistant for her brother at Hurricane Fence Company in Pharr, TX until her retirement in 1983. She enjoyed taking care of her family, crocheting, walking, gardening, and playing games with the residents of The Palms Retirement Center in Harlingen. She was the last living charter member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Harlingen where she regularly attended and served as Sunday School Secretary for a number of years.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Preston, of Harlingen; sister Odethel Marie Knutson of Tyler, TX, brother Jaret E. (Betty) Cummings of Harlingen, two sisters-in-law – Shirley Foster of Chicago, IL and Sidney Garrett of Victoria, TX; three grandchildren – Robert Preston (Laurie) of Harlingen, Rita Baker (David) of Houston, TX, and Randy Preston of Waxahachie, TX; and several nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas C. Herkimer Jr. in 1999, son Milton Herkimer in 1991, son-in-law M. L. Preston in 1987, brother Albert Cummings in 1962, and brother Arlis Cummings, Sr. in 1988.
Funeral services for Dovie Lee Herkimer, under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, will be held Monday, February 21, 2011, 10 a.m., at First Church of the Nazarene in Harlingen, located at 2001 North 7th Street, with Pastor Mel Justice officiating. Interment will follow at Harlingen-Combes Cemetery.
Pallbearers are David Hall, Victor McCutchen, David Osborne, Sr., David Osborne, Jr., Jim Siravo, and Mike Sullivan. Honorary Pallbearer will be Arkie Stewart.
Visitation will be held today, February 20 from 1 – 9pm at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen, and the family will receive visitors between 3 and 5pm.
