Dorothy Bernice "Jackie" Rodgers

March 12, 1918 — January 25, 2009

Harlingen, TX:
Dorothy Bernice "Jackie" Rodgers died Sunday, January 25, 2009, at Golden Palms Health Center in Harlingen.
Jackie was born to Samuel Edgar and Eula Owen Thurmon on March 12, 1918, in Floydada, Texas, the youngest of three daughters.  During a visit to her sister who had moved to Harlingen, she met Raymond Joseph Rodgers, whom she wed on November 21, 1937.
Jackie loved her life as a homemaker, raising two daughters and devoting herself to helping others.  She became an active volunteer at St. Anthony Church and St. Anthony School, serving on the Altar Society and as President of the Mothers' Club.  With two little girls to dress, she taught herself to sew and became an accomplished seamstress whose talents were widely admired.  Always ready to help a friend, she was well known for her offers of a ride or a chocolate cake.  Most recently, she was a faithful member of the Valley Baptist Hospital Auxiliary until the deterioration of her own health prevented her active participation.
Besides her sewing, cooking, and family care, Jackie loved playing bridge, an activity she pursued well into her eighties.
Jackie was preceded in death by her husband Raymond in 1973, her daughter Rose Mary Gibson in 2005, her sisters Katie Riley in 1999 and Mary L. Fulkerson in 1998.
Her survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Layne, son-in-law Len Layne, grandson Eric and his wife Laurie, grandson Michael, great-grandchildren Patrick, William and Catherine all of Austin.
Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7:00 PM at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
