Dorothy Rushing Fiske

February 15, 1914 — September 6, 2010

Harlingen, TX:
Dorothy Rushing Fiske of Harlingen Texas took the hand of Christ and together they entered the gates of heaven on September 06, 2010 as she peacefully slept under his continuous care.  Dorothy became a Christian in 1948 and during the years until her passing, never wavered from her devotion to her God. She committed her life to Christ, her family, friends, and reached out always to those in need.  She will be remembered by those that crossed her path as a Godly woman that could pray in a manner that would cause the person to know with confidence that God was intently listening and that their prayers were being answered.  Her small frame house located on North First street in Harlingen was often filled throughout the day by those seeking intercessory prayer for special needs and healing.  She had an incredible capacity to love and a compassionate heart for the stranger looking for a place to rest.  Her shelves are yet filled with years of journals of her conversations with God and with prayers of blessings for others and thanksgiving.
Dorothy became an ordained minister in 1986.  She served for many years as one of the Chaplains at the MHMR Center located in Harlingen, Texas.  Also during the 1980’s, she was the principal Incorporator of the Light House Ministries, a Texas non-profit corporation focusing on an outreach Christian ministry.  This Corporation served as the umbrella organization that sponsored many light house ministries currently operating throughout the State.  Dorothy also served for many years as a faithful member of the Harlingen Ministerial Alliance.  She was an accomplished vocalist and pianist and performed her music throughout the years at churches in Harlingen.  She established contact with Russian families in Russia following her trip there with the Trinity Broadcasting Network and provided care packages that included shoes, clothing, bibles and other items of necessity.  She was a bible scholar and a prolific reader of Christian books.  She was a woman committed to her God, the teachings of Jesus Christ for all of the 96 years of her life and a faithful thither to many religious organizations often at the expense of meeting her on personal needs.  Her life was her testimony and she lived her faith daily.  On September 6, 2010 she heard the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”
Dorothy Lee Wootton was born in Claude Texas on February 15, 1914. She attended high school in Denton, Texas at what is now called the University of North Texas.  She moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1935 at the age of 21 where she met and married Ralph B. Rushing the same year.  Dorothy attended Southmost College in Brownsville and received her B.S. Degree in Education from Pan American University located in Edinburg in 1973.  During the 13 years while working on her B.S. Degree at nights and summers, she served as a substitute teacher in the Harlingen Independent School District.  She taught at Dishman Elementary School for many years.  Following her retirement, she spent her time volunteering in areas of social services, traveling, reading, pursuing her passion of gardening, painting and loving her children and grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Ralph B. Rushing, son Jimmy Charles Rushing and her second husband, Moses Fiske.
