Dorothy Irene Byrd
7/28/1931 – 2/6/2015 (83)

Round Rock, TX:
Dorothy Irene Byrd of Santa Rosa, Texas, beloved wife, mother & grandmother went home to be with The Lord on February 6, 2015.  She succumbed from complications with pulmonary hypertension.
Dorothy was born in Macksburg, Iowa, daughter of Rodney and Pearl Hilbery.
She was a 1948 graduate of Mission Senior High School (Mission, TX).  She attended Durham Business College and graduated as Executive Secretary (1949).
In 1950 she met the Love of her life Silas Matthew Byrd and was married on August 18.
In addition to her duties as wife and mother Dorothy had a professional career.  She was bookkeeper for Byrd Parts & Service (Matt’s business).  She also had a 30 year professional career with the United States Postal Service, most of which she served as Postmaster in Sebastian, Texas.  She was a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE) and the National League of Postmasters.  She served in various community outreaches.
Dorothy came to know Jesus and was baptized on April 23, 1939.  She was a member at Combes Baptist Church and was a sponsor in various ministries throughout the country.
While Dorothy enjoyed listening to music, reading, sewing, and working puzzles, her family was her passion.  Serving as a God fearing wife and mother was at the center of her being.  Nothing brought her more joy than to raise her family in the Christian way.
Dorothy was a strong individual.  In 1992 she survived an attack by Africanized “Killer Bees” in which she was stung over 500 times.  She faced losing a husband, son & daughter all to cancer.  She herself was a breast cancer survivor.  Yet, through it all she would always smile and try to find something positive to say.
She was preceded in death by husband, Silas Matthew Byrd; daughter, Judy Lynn Byrd and son, Gary Wayne Byrd.
She is survived by: daughter & son-in-law, Peggy Irene & David Harms of The Colony, TX, daughter & son-in-law, Billie Kaye & Steve Engelbrecht of Austin, TX, granddaughter, Lauren Olivia Engelbrecht of Austin, TX, grandson, Jacob Dalton Engelbrecht of  Austin, TX, granddaughter, Shelby Lynn Engelbrecht of Austin, TX, grandson, Joshua Tyler Van Syckle of Austin, TX; brother, Donald Hilbery of Mission, TX
The family wishes to acknowledge St. David’s Medical Center (Round Rock, TX) and Hospice Compassus for their kindness and compassion during her last days.
Her life was a true and faithful testimony to her most cherished desire that all people would come to know her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
